Project Title: How the Pandemic Affects Hong Kong’s Online Food Delivery Industry

Abstract:

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Hong Kong Government imposed a dine-in ban to avoid unnecessary contacts between people. Many people have changed their dining habits from out-of-home dining to at-home dining. It also raises the demand for food delivery services. Recently, Online Food Delivery (OFD) service is getting more popular. It provides an online platform for their users, including restaurants and customers, to receive orders or place orders. OFD service providers will assign a courier to pick the order from the restaurant and deliver it to the customer. This service seems in need especially under the current situation. This motivates us to conduct a project to study the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic to the industry. In this study, we analyse the business volume changes of the OFD service providers before and during the pandemic. Moreover, we conduct a survey to understand the reasons for the changes. Finally, we conclude how COVID-19 affects the development of the industry.
