The First President’s Cup 2019 successfully completed on 31 May 2019. Through three different sports tournaments, the President’s Cup aims to enhance interaction and foster the bonding among colleagues and also to promote healthy living and sports atmosphere on campus.

MOU Signing Ceremony between PCCW Global and the Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain

PCCW Global, the international operating division of HKT, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications service provider, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong’s Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain (PRISC) on 10 December 2018. The two signatories will collaborate in conducting high-level academic research covering the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, focusing on major projects involving smart city applications and infrastructure, as well as technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and cloud computing.

The Student Orientation Day 2018 was held on 21 August 2018. Professor Lawrence Leung, Dean of School of Decision Sciences, warmly welcomed the freshmen from the five programmes (BA-AHCC, BSC-AIN, BSC-DSBI, BBA-SCM and BMSIM) and gave an overview of the School and its activities.
HSMC Publishes Research Report Proposes Collaboration at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal to Increase Efficiency and Competitiveness

A media luncheon was held on 8 August 2018 to announce the findings and recommendations of a study, entitled Collaboration at the Hong Kong Port – Benefits from Facility Sharing, calls for the sharing of facilities in the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals (KTCTs), including berths, cranes and yards, and for the different terminal operators to collaborate on infrastructures and computer systems to achieve direct operations for transhipment between different terminals. The study is authored by Dr Collin Wong Wai-hung, Dr Helen Ma Hoi-lam and Professor Lawrence Leung Chi-kin from the Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain of HSMC.

The School of Decision Sciences held its Achievement Awards Presentation Ceremony 2016/17 in Fung Yiu King Hall on 8 March 2018 to honour the best teachers and students. A total of 26 teachers received the School Teaching Excellence Award and 12 teachers received the School Research Excellence Award. Eighty-eight students were awarded the Dean’s List and Best Progress Award for their academic achievement. The School also commended students for winning awards in external academic competitions and bringing honour to the College.

A report titled “Logistics and Trade Facilitation in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area: Stakeholders Concerns, Comments from Central Government, and Policy Recommendations” was prepared by a research team formed by members from the Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain, HSMC and the Asian Institute of Supply Chains & Logistics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), based on a study which examines logistics and trade facilitation issues in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (hereafter referred to as Big Bay Area). A forum “The Future of Hong Kong’s Insurance Education Landscape”, organised by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, was successfully held in the afternoon of 29 November 2017 (Wednesday) in Fung Yiu King Hall, 4/F, S.H. Ho Academic Building, Hang Seng Management College.
The Forum brought together distinguished business leaders, industry experts and academics to share thoughts and insights on local insurance education.
SSSDP Workshop @ HSMC Information Day 2017

The HSMC Information Day was well attended by more than 1,000 visitors. Teachers and student ambassadors of the School of Decision Sciences (“the School”) promoted our programmes to interested parents and secondary school students at the information booths. The School also organised two SSSDP workshops with games which allowed secondary school students to learn more about our programmes through interactive games. After the games, students joined a group mock interview and received tips on how to improve their interview skills.

The School of Decision Sciences nurtures talents to meet Hong Kong’s social and economic needs. Our five programmes, including BBA (Honours) in Supply Chain Management, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Actuarial Studies and Insurance, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied and Human-Centred Computing, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Data Science and Business Intelligence and Bachelor of Management Science and Information Management (Honours), are under the Government’s Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) starting from 2018/19 academic year. A subsidy of up to HK$40,000 per year will be provided to each student. An article in Ming Pao Daily was published on 2 November 2017. The School of Decision Sciences will launch a new programme, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Actuarial Studies and Insurance, in the academic year 2017/18. There is a strong demand for professionals in insurance companies and related regulatory bodies. The Programme aims to develop students’ ability to apply blended skills in statistics, business, and computing to design, analyse and manage insurance projects. Students are prepared for taking up professional roles in back office of insurance companies such as actuary, underwriter, and claims officer upon graduation. The School of Decision Sciences held its Achievement Awards Presentation Ceremony in Fung Yiu King Hall on 9 March 2017 to honour the best teachers and students of the School. A total of 19 teachers received the School’s Teaching Excellence Award, and 78 students were named to the Dean’s List and Best Progress Award. Moreover, the School also commended students who won in prestigious external competitions for their accomplishments and brought honour to the College.

A team of three BBA-SCM students, CHAN Kuen U Luis, WONG Tsz Kin Jimmy and KOK Man Kit Steve beat 11 university teams and won the Champion of the CILTHK Case Competition 2016 with their research project entitled “Halal Logistics and Supply Chain Management”. Their proposed development of an independent supply chain and automatic system to centralize processing of the Halal food will enhance the local logistics industry’s credibility.

A team of five BBA-SCM graduates, CHAN Yuet Fai Novena, KOK Man Kit Steve, LAM Yin Tung, LUI Cheuk Man and YAN Kwai Kit, won the prestigious CILTHK Final Year Project Award 2016 with their project entitled “Analysis on arrival sequencing methods for smoothing arrival congestion and reducing arrival delay in HKIA”. Their proposal could help reduce 10% of the flight delay in the Hong Kong International Airport.

Opening Ceremony of Virtual Reality and Big Data Analytics Centre cum Virtual Reality Forum

Virtual Reality has landed at HSMC. The Opening Ceremony of the Virtual Reality and Big Data Analytics Centre (VRBD Centre) cum Virtual Reality Forum was held on 6 October 2016. The Centre has been established to enhance the development in teaching and research, with the support of a fully immersive and interactive visualisation system. The VR system and facilities are funded by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

HSMC Campus Visit 2015 Organised by School of Decision Sciences

The School organised a campus visit to receive a total of 70 teachers and students from four high schools in Kowloon and New Territories. The campus visit featured a variety of events, including introduction of our programmes, future development of related industries in Hong Kong and in the world, and career development of graduate students. All participants also visited the campus and our learning facilities such as Decision Sciences Technology Laboratory and the Applied Statistics Laboratory.
