Ten students from the School of Decision Sciences (SDSC) have been selected to participate in the Fubon Bank (HK) Data Hackathon 2024, organized by Fubon Bank (Hong Kong), AWS and Cloud Innovation School of HSUHK, on 2 November 2024.

This is the first time Fubon (HK) organized a data hackathon event for their 90 business leaders. HSUHK has been selected as one of their partners, as a co-organiser for our 10 SDSC students to gain such valuable opportunities. Students need to join a four-day training workshops provided by AWS, and to work as data specialists in collaboration with business leaders from Fubon over several weeks before the signature event.

On the event day, the Associate Dean (Engagement and Undergraduate studies) of SDSC delivered a welcome speech and encouraged our students to apply the three-stages of decision analytics skills—visualization, predictability, and digital transformation – to support the company in achieving its business goals. Apart from applying the skills learned from the workshops, SDSC students demonstrated strong teamwork, analytical and presentation skills, and adaptability. Each team, composed of one student and nine business leaders, need to come across a data storytelling competition hosted by AWS, and deliver a presentation on their findings, based on the data provided, to the judges from Fubon and CIS. The Associate Head of CIS provided recommendations for each team to further develop their analytical skills for business impacts.

Through this event, our SDSC students were equipped with the latest cloud and artificial intelligence technologies, understood business dynamics in the financial sector, and worked with prominent business leaders. Such a learning experience is paramount to their growth and development. Both Fubon and AWS were also impressed by our SDSC students from HSUHK.
