Professor Chan Wai Sum Receives 2026 PhD Alumni Leadership Award from Temple University, USA

Congratulations to Professor Chan Wai Sum on receiving the 2026 PhD Alumni Leadership Award from the Fox School of Business at Temple University on 1 May 2026. The award is presented annually to one PhD alumnus across all concentrations in the Business School in recognition of outstanding leadership and research contributions to their academic field. There are in total five awards:

  • Executive DBA Alumni Leadership Award
  • Executive DBA Alumni Distinguished Research Award
  • PhD Alumni Leadership Award
  • Distinguished PhD Alumni Award
  • Outstanding Early-Career PhD Alumni Award

Professor Chan earned his PhD in Applied Statistics from Temple in 1989. Over his career, he has made significant contributions to both academia and practice. Professor Chan’s research expertise spans stochastic modeling of actuarial assumptions, statistical applications in risk management, and time series forecasting. Recognised for his scholarly contributions, he was awarded the Edward A. Lew Research Award (Second Prize) in 2006. With over 120 publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, Prof Chan has been a dedicated educator in business statistics, finance and actuarial science since 1990.

In university leadership and management, Professor Chan has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic development and quality assurance. As Dean of the School of Decision Sciences at HSUHK, he initiated and proposed a Professional Doctorate in Decision Analytics and two MSc programmes, while also establishing partnerships with universities in the Greater Bay Area in China. He has served in quality assurance roles for multiple institutions and accreditation bodies for local and overseas universities, ensuring adherence to local and international standards.

Professor Chan shared that he was deeply honoured by the recognition and viewed the award as encouragement for his continued work in teaching and research.
